The reverse osmosis membrane is the core component to achieve reverse osmosis. It is an artificial semipermeable membrane to mimic biological semipermeable membranes and possesses certain characteristics. It is generally made from high molecular weight materials, such as cellulose acetate membranes, aromaticamide membranes, and aromatic polyhydrazide membranes. The diameter of the surface micropores is usually between 0.5 and 10 nm The permeability is related to the chemical structure of the membrane itself. Some polymers have good salt rejection but poor water permeability. Some polymers have a structure with more hydrophilic groups, so the water permeability is relatively fast. Therefore, a satisfactory reverse osmosis membrane should have an appropriate permeation or desalination rate.

The reverse osmosis membrane should have the following characteristics:
(1) It should have a high desalination rate at high rates;
(2) It should have high mechanical strength and long service life;
(3) It should function at low operating pressures;
(4) It should able to withstand the effects of chemical or biochemical actions;
(5) It should be less affected by factors such as pH and temperature;
(6) The raw for membrane preparation should be easily available, simple to process, and low in cost.
